Alpha Chi Omega's National Philanthropy is Domestic Violence Awareness. The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation supports educational programs for victims of domestic violence as well as hands-on support at the community level. Grants go to various agencies across the nation providing services to victims as well as providing development and implementation of educational programs for members.
At the Sigma chapter, we work closely with the Domestic Violence Intervention Program of Iowa City. All of the proceeds from our fall and spring philanthropy events go directly back to DVIP, and many of our sisters are regular volunteers for the organization.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will be victims of severe violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Alpha Chi Omega believes in fostering healthy relationships as well as bringing awareness to the prevelance of domestic violence in our community.
During the month of October, Alpha Chi Omega hosts numerous events to benefit the local Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Johnson County to promote Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year, fundraisers included a Blaze Pizza day, Candygrams delivered on Halloween, and our Donut Let Love Hurt event!
For this year's Spring Philanthropy, we gathered to Walk A Mile In Their Shoes, with members donating high heels to represent survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. We also provide pizza, sodas, and field games before the mile walk!
Besides our two philanthropy events, we also celebrate Healthy Relationships Week. This year we held several events, including a Greek educational event on what a healthy relationship is, Hot Cocoa with AXO, and Candygrams delivered on Valentine's Day.
Healthy Relationships Week is celebrated by Alpha Chi Omega chapters all across the country, and is a week we can all come together to advocate for healthy relationships and increase awareness for domestic violence.
Additionally, Alpha Chi Omega chapters nationwide celebrate Denim Day. In response to an Italian Supreme Court ruling which indicated that consent had been given because of jeans being "too tight," Alpha Chi's wear Denim on April 24th in solidarity with sexual assualt survivors and to spread awareness of the importance of consent.
